Using A Seat Belt Pad As A Wind Blocking Deadcat

Today is another news day!

First of all: Using A Seat Belt Pad As A Wind Blocking Deadcat (published by DIYPhotography.net -DIY Photography and Studio Lighting)

Chad Bredahl just sent in this smart tip about using a seat belt pad as a deadcat. (Deadcats protect microphones from wind, so if you are shooting video outdoors, it kills a lot of the wind noise).

Deadcats are not that expensive to begin with, but I guess auto part shops are easier to find if you are on a hurry and need a quick solution.

Here comes another news flash!

I will start with this: Five-Digit Studio Flash Catfight: Broncolor vs. Profoto (published by Strobist)

As Profoto and Broncolor battle for supremacy in the high-end studio flash world, things are getting all like, "Rawrrr, nice sweater. Does it come in your size?"

And just like Lexus and Infinity luxury car ads, they each want to point out their being better in some measurable way. Witness this Broncolor-produced "real-world shootout"? Read more »

Have you read before that: 4 Practice Techniques to Develop Photographic Observation (published by Digital Photography School)

practic Techniques to Develop.jpgThe greatest skill of a talented photographer is not how accurate he or she can be with exposure; it’s not being spot on with all of the tech details, or putting out thousands of images a week.

If you are doing any videography, a jib (or a crane) is probably the third piece of gear you will buy (after a camera and a slider).

To end on another breathtaking story: Fearmongers Are Giving Photographers a Bad Name (published by Black Star Rising)

These three photographs have something in common: They are all about fear.

They are a reminder that every day, photographers are mistaken for perverts, terrorists, thieves, and other weirdos just because of the cameras around their necks. People seem to assume that we are ?up tosomething.?

Q&A: Controlling the Sun When Using Flash – A Comparative Guide

This is what I learnt today…

I will start with this: Q&A: Controlling the Sun When Using Flash – A Comparative Guide (published by Strobist)

After Monday's post lighting a soccer player into the sun at a wide aperture, several questions came up via comments and Twitter about the relative benefits of doing this in different ways.

Yes, there are different ways to do it — namely ND, high-speed sync and special-chip cameras. Each method has advantages and disadvantages. The full how-to and scorecard, inside. Read more »

Choosing a Photography Workshop Or Tour

What about I am excited today?

Here is the first: Choosing a Photography Workshop Or Tour (published by Digital Photography School)

It’s in the gloom of the Northern hemisphere’s winter that many people start planning trips for the new year. It’s also a time some of us upgrade our cameras when the big sales hit in December and begin looking for a teacher to help them get more out of it. A perfect time to talk about choosing a photography workshop or instructional tour.

While I lead workshops and tours around the USA and world, I have been on the other side of the coin on more than one occasion in the past. Choosing who you will learn from can be intimidating and a large financial and time risk. I used those experiences and time spent consulting with other tour operators to come up with a list of questions and items to think about when you decide you want to learn more from a local or international instructor.

Build A Huge Beauty Dish After Eating Great Food In Chinatown

What you can find digging around Internet?

Here is the first: Build A Huge Beauty Dish After Eating Great Food In Chinatown (published by DIYPhotography.net -DIY Photography and Studio Lighting)

One of the things I remember most from my visit to new york city is the tour I took around Chinatown. Specifically I remember sitting in one of the local places ordering food which I did not know the name of nor its ingredients.

It was some kind of soup and it was delicious. Till this very day I am not sure what was that floating eyeball but I enjoyed it very much.

I found this captivating: Panning: Weekly Photography Challenge (published by Digital Photography School)

This week your photographic challenge is to take and share a photo that uses the technique of panning. We’ve written a tutorial previous on how to master the art of panning (also check out this one on panning too)so you may like to go read that one first – but the challenge essentially revolves around photographing a moving subject and attempting to keep it in focus by panning your camera along with it. The result is hopefully a relatively in focus and sharp subject with some lovely motion blur around it.

I found this captivating: Lytro 4D Camera Makes Time Magazine?s Top 5 Cool Innovations List (published by Digital Photography School)

Perhaps you have heard of Lytro. I first got wind of the company a few months ago and thought it sounded amazing. But then the ?That?s a press release. Where?s the follow through?? mechanism in my brain that stops me from buying useless products kicked in. Was it too good to be true?

The camera the company is creating  is said be able to allow a viewer to focus on any spot in the image AFTER the image has been shot. This means different viewers can pick what they like and focus there, even changing the apparent aperture to control depth of field. All after an image has been shot. After checking out the Time article and the company?s website (which includes sample images) I believe the camera will be a hit from the moment it is stocked on store shelves.
