OK, lets begin!: Natural vs Artificial Light: Which Do You Shoot With Most? (published by Digital Photography School)

Here at dPS we’re getting ready to release a brand new eBook next week. The topic is one that we’ve been asked to cover for years now – ‘natural light’.

One of the things that attracted me to the topic is that natural light is something that is freely available to all photographers (at least all who are not working the night shift or living near the north or south poles at certain times of the year).

I found this captivating story: Vintage Color Cross Processing in Lightroom 4 (published by DIYPhotography.net -DIY Photography and Studio Lighting)

If you like that cross processed look that you get with using instagram, but would rather to use a DSLR to shoot rather than the iPhone, the guys over at SLR Lounge has a sweet video tutorial for you.

I found this electrifying story: Preparing For A Client Photoshoot (published by Digital Photography School)

By Annie Tao

For those starting out in the photography business, you may wonder how to best prepare for your client photoshoot. Once your subjects start paying you for photography, there are expectations to deliver a certain level of quality and even quantity of ?good shots?. So preparing for your shoot is more than just grabbing your camera.

OK, lets begin!: Lowepro Passport Sling Camera Bag ? Review (published by Digital Photography School)

Since I’m a girl and a photographer, I’m a bag junkie. I have more camera bags than shoes! I received the Passport Sling just in time for a busy two-week trip to Europe and decided to use it exclusively to carry my 5D MarkII with the 24-70 mm lens attached, extra batteries, CF cards and the few personal items. The Passport Sling immediately became one of my favorite camera bags!

Like most photographers I am always looking for that perfect bag for the job or situation.

Seemingly quitely, some things happened since last week

To start with: Less than 24 Hours Left to Save 33% on our New Post Processing Guide (published by Digital Photography School)

One month ago we launched our brand new volume in our ‘Photo Nuts’ library of eBooks with Photo Nuts and Post: a Guide to Post Processing.

The month since launch has been an exciting time for the team at dPS HQ. Not only have their been some very kind reviews written about the eBook – we’re also excited to finally have our vision of 3 Photo Nuts eBooks all together at last!

I found this breathtaking story: How to Create Impossible Images: Erik Johansson (published by Digital Photography School)

Got a spare 6 minutes? Here’s photographers Erik Johansson presenting at TED about his ‘Impossible Photography’.

To end on another exciting story: DIY: Circle of Confusion Shape Modifier (published by DIYPhotography.net -DIY Photography and Studio Lighting)

We are always happy to get a nice bokeh build tutorial in the blog, even if it means we have to throw away the name of our best product and find it a new one, maybe the circle of confusion masters kit…

Circle of Confusion Shape Modifier – At least that’s what I call it. I call it that because ?circle of confusion? refers to the actual defocused spot, while ?bokeh? refers to the aesthetic quality of the blurring caused by the larger-than-a-point circles of confusion. If you disagree with my reasoning, just ignore the title (darn, need to think of a new product name, UT). Anyway, since you are reading this, you have probably seen this article. I really liked the idea and made one just like it. It worked very well, but to make one for every shape I might want seemed a bit impractical due to the amount of space such a collection would require. So I set out to solve that ?problem.? And here is what I came up with…

First of all: PocketWizard Plus III’s: More Trigger, Less Cash (published by Strobist)

(Click pics for bigger versions.)

A couple of years back, as PocketWizard were rolling out increasingly complex remotes featuring wireless TTL and HyperSync and everything else, I sent an e-mail to one of their engineers.

Basically, it said that if you want photographers to love you long time, release a stripped-down "cadet" model that is as reliable as a Plus II, but at a lower price. Because in the end, what we want is rock-solid triggering and non-obsolescence — at a lower entry point (amirite?)

Turns out they were listening, if only half-way. Because the PocketWizard Plus IIIs are coming, and they are $30 cheaper than the PW Plus IIs.

But stripped down, they ain't. Not by a long shot. Read more »

I found this electrifying story: Help This Locationally Challenged Photographer Improve Her Portraiture (published by Digital Photography School)

“I’ve been working on my portrait photography recently – but one thing that I lack is good locations. Most of the great portraits I see online by other photographers have exotic locations that add so much to the image – but I’m trapped in a very unstylsh house most days looking after kids in a very unattractive small town.

Help? I’m locationally challenged – do you have any advice?” – Meg

Thats all folks

I will start with this: How to Create Contact Sheets in Lightroom (published by Digital Photography School)

Historically a contact sheet was a page of images each printed at the same size as the film negative ? they were used as a reference for the images on the film roll. They were called contact sheets because the film was placed in close contact with the paper when printing them.

In another interesting story: How To Deliver A Useful Photo Critique (published by Digital Photography School)

Much has been written on DPS about receiving feedback and examining your own photos to help improve. Today I want to give you some pointers on providing a critique to others (when asked for) so the conversation between you and the photographer is time well spent.

At its base, a critique is an examination of a piece of work, be it writing or art or potato chips, and a reasoned response to what is examined. I?ll be talking mostly about ?soft? critiques in this post as they are the ones that examine content in a less mathematical way. Not that math doesn?t apply to photos, but examining a photo is more subjective than objective.

I found this electrifying: Richard Avedon: Darkness and Light (published by Strobist)

From the American Masters Series, this outstanding documentary on Richard Avedon was originally aired in 1995.

It's an intimate, hour-and-a-half long journey into the mind of one of the most important photographers of the 20th century, and it's brilliant. Read more »

So let’s make ‘Dawn’ the theme for this weeks photography challenge.

To end on another captivating story: 24 Beautiful Dawn Images (published by Digital Photography School)

To start with: The Rule of Thirds: Weekly Photography Challenge (published by Digital Photography School)

This week your photography challenge is to utilise the most common photographic composition rule – the Rule of Thirds.

At Halloween last year I was asked to photograph some kids I’ve shot from time to time since they were born. Basically their mum likes to have some up to date photos of the kids and Halloween seemed like as good a time as any to get some shots.

Have you heard that: For Great Photographs, ?This is What I Saw? Isn?t Enough (published by Black Star Rising)

Looking at photographs is a very personal experience. Everyone has their opinions about what is good art and what is not. When it comes to photographs, some like landscapes, others go for street photography, and others prefer conceptual photography or portraits. It’s all a matter of personal taste. Of course, I have my own preferences, but it is not a particular style of photography that I prefer over another. What interests me are the way a photograph is made and the impact it has on me as aviewer.

Seeing and Believing

First of all: Using A Seat Belt Pad As A Wind Blocking Deadcat (published by DIYPhotography.net -DIY Photography and Studio Lighting)

Chad Bredahl just sent in this smart tip about using a seat belt pad as a deadcat. (Deadcats protect microphones from wind, so if you are shooting video outdoors, it kills a lot of the wind noise).

Deadcats are not that expensive to begin with, but I guess auto part shops are easier to find if you are on a hurry and need a quick solution.
